We are heading into the last month of summer and normally August is a month of vacationing, camping, and spending weekends at the beach. This means more fun outside, which ultimately  means we have to be vigilant about protecting our skin from the sun, bugs, and more. For those of us who opt to stay away from drugstore bug spray, steroid ointments, and DEET you maybe wondering what are natural ways to care for your skin?   

It’s no surprise that we are a little obsessed with shea butter, and although on its own it is very effective at calming and soothing irritated skin, when combined with other natural ingredients like therapeutic essential oils it can become a favorite remedy.

Below are two recipes for you to try at home. Note these are home remedies and should not replace any recommendations made by your physician.

Shea Butter Bug Repellant

  • 1 oz beeswax beads
  • 2 oz pure shea butter
  • 1 oz coconut oil
  • 30 drops lemon eucalyptus oil

Directions:

  1. Melt your shea butter, beeswax pastilles and coconut oil over a double boiler until completely melted.
  2. After the mixture has cooled add essential oil.
  3. Store in airtight container for about 2-3 months.
  4. Use on clean skin to help repel bugs and mosquitoes. Reapply as necessary.

Sunburn Soother

  • 2 oz. pure unrefined Shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons Aloe Vera gel
  • 30 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 4 oz. empty clean jar
  • electric hand mixer/whisk

Directions:

  1. Slightly warm shea butter over a double broiler so it becomes easy to mix but not melted.
  2. Add the Aloe Vera and Lavender Oil.
  3. Gently mix until all ingredients are well blended.
  4. Store in airtight container for 2-3 months.
  5. Use on clean skin to help soothe sunburn. Reapply as necessary.
